Lumbar Spine Compressive Force Analysis — Biomechanical Models

Overview

Spine Load Analysis uses biomechanical modelling to calculate the compressive and shear forces acting on the lumbar spine — particularly the L4/L5 and L5/S1 intervertebral discs — during manual handling, lifting, and awkward posture tasks. The analysis uses static or dynamic biomechanical models — such as the 3DSSPP model or the Dortmund Approach — to calculate the forces generated by the external load, the body segment weights, and the muscle forces required to maintain equilibrium, and expresses the result in Newtons for comparison against established biomechanical tolerance limits for the lumbar spine. Spine load analysis is used to evaluate the risk of acute low back injury and the long-term risk of lumbar disc degeneration associated with repetitive or high-load spinal loading.
