Industrial Workstation Assessment

What is Industrial Workstation Assessment?

An Industrial Workstation Assessment evaluates the ergonomic conditions at a manufacturing, production, or warehouse workstation — examining the relationship between the worker, the task, the tools, the equipment, and the physical workspace to identify ris k factors that contribute to musculoskeletal injury, fatigue, and reduced productivity. Unlike office environments, industrial workstations often involve standing, reaching, lifting, repetitive motion, force exertion, and exposure to vibration — all of whi ch create distinct and significant ergonomic risks that require specialist evaluation.

A qualified ergonomist conducts a physical assessment of the workstation — observing worker posture and movement during actual task performance and applying validated to ols including RULA — Rapid Upper Limb Assessment — and REBA — Rapid Entire Body Assessment — to quantify postural risk. Tool design, workstation height, reach distances, force requirements, and task rotation are all evaluated — with recommendations for wor kstation redesign, tool modification, or administrative controls.

Industrial musculoskeletal disorders are among the leading causes of long -term workplace absence in manufacturing — resulting in lost production, recruitment costs, and compensation claims t hat accumulate quietly over time. An Industrial Workstation Assessment identifies the specific risks present at each workstation and provides a prioritised, practical plan for addressing them — protecting workers and improving operational performance simul taneously.
