ACGIH TLV for Hand Activity

American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists — Threshold Limit Value for Hand Activity Level

Overview

The ACGIH TLV for Hand Activity is an internationally recognised guideline that defines safe exposure limits for repetitive hand and wrist activity — establishing the threshold below which nearly all workers can perform repetitive tasks without developing musculoskeletal disorders of the hand, wrist, and forearm. The assessment is based on two variables — Hand Activity Level, which rates the frequency and effort of hand and wrist motion on a scale of zero to ten, and Normalised Peak Hand Force, which expresses peak force as a proportion of maximum grip strength. These values are plotted against the ACGIH action limit and TLV curves to classify risk and guide corrective action. It is updated periodically as part of the annual TLV and BEI documentation.
