Work-Rest Ratio Analysis

Work-Rest Ratio and Recovery Time Analysis

Overview

Work-Rest Ratio Analysis is the ergonomic assessment of the relationship between periods of physical or cognitive work and the recovery periods available to the worker — evaluating whether the recovery time built into a work schedule is sufficient to prevent the accumulation of fatigue and the development of musculoskeletal disorders. Inadequate recovery between physically demanding tasks or repetitive cycles is a primary mechanism through which cumulative musculoskeletal damage develops — because muscles, tendons, and joints require sufficient rest to repair micro-damage and restore metabolic balance between periods of loading. Work-Rest Ratio Analysis uses established guidelines — including those from NIOSH, ACGIH, and occupational physiology research — to determine appropriate work-rest ratios for specific task intensities, environmental conditions, and worker populations.
