BIS Ergonomics Standards

Overview

The Bureau of Indian Standards has developed a range of Indian Standards relevant to ergonomics and workplace design — covering office furniture dimensions, workstation requirements, lighting standards, noise exposure limits, and manual handling guideline s applicable to Indian workplaces. Key standards include IS 7328 for office furniture ergonomics, IS 3483 for workplace lighting, and various product-specific standards that define ergonomic requirements for equipment used in Indian industry. While interna tional standards such as ISO and EN are widely referenced, BIS standards provide the regulatory baseline for ergonomics compliance in Indian workplaces — and knowledge of applicable BIS standards is essential for any ergonomics assessment conducted in the Indian regulatory context.
