Lux Measurement — Illumination Assessment
Lux Measurement for Workplace Illumination
Overview
Lux measurement is the quantitative assessment of illuminance — the amount of light falling on a work surface — using a calibrated lux meter to determine whether lighting levels in a workplace meet the requirements for the tasks being performed. Illuminanc e is measured in lux — one lux being equal to one lumen per square metre — and recommended levels vary significantly by task type, from 100 lux for general circulation areas to 500 lux for detailed office work and 1000 lux or more for precision visual task s. Inadequate lighting causes eyestrain, headaches, postural strain from leaning towards the work, and increased error rates — while excessive or poorly distributed lighting causes glare and visual fatigue. Indian Standard IS 3483 provides the benchmark fo r workplace illumination levels in India.
