A Job Demand Analysis is a systematic examination of the physical, cognitive, and environmental demands placed on a worker by a spec ific role — documenting what the job actually requires in terms of posture, force, movement, duration, environment, and mental load. It provides an objective, evidence -based profile of a job that goes beyond a job description — capturing the real ergonomic and physiological demands that a person must meet to perform the role safely and sustainably over time.
The analysis is conducted through direct observation of the role being performed under normal working conditions — supplemented by worker and superviso r interviews, task timing studies, force measurements, and environmental monitoring where relevant. The output is a detailed Job Demands Profile that documents all significant physical and cognitive demands, identifies the ergonomic risk factors inherent t o the role, and provides a basis for workstation design, pre - employment screening, return -to-work planning, and occupational health assessment.
Job Demand Analysis is particularly valuable for organisations managing workforce fitness, return -to- work progra mmes, occupational health surveillance, and workstation design — because it provides the factual foundation that all of these activities require. Without an accurate understanding of what a job actually demands, neither the workplace nor the worker can be effectively supported.
