Solar PV Safety Assessment

Electrical Safety Engineering & Studies Header

What is a Solar PV Safety Assessment?

A Solar PV Safety Assessment is a technical evaluation of the safety of a photovoltaic solar installation — examining the electrical design, installation quality, fire safety implications, structural loading, and operational safety of the system against applicable standards and best practice. PV systems present unique safety risks — including DC arc faults, reverse current flow, thermal runaway in battery storage systems, roof loading and structural integrity issues, firefighter access and safe roof operations, and the electrical isolation challenges posed by systems that remain energised during daylight hours even when the main supply is isolated.

A Solar PV Safety Assessment identifies these risks and evaluates the adequacy of the controls in place to manage them. It is relevant for building owners, facility managers, EHS professionals, and investors with rooftop or ground-mounted PV installations — particularly where the system has not been commissioned recently, where the building use has changed, or where due diligence on the asset's safety performance is required.
