Lock Out Tag Out Try Out (LOTOTO) Assessment

Electrical Safety Audit & Assessment Header

What is a Lock Out Tag Out Try Out (LOTOTO) Assessment?

Lock Out Tag Out Try Out — LOTOTO — is the safety procedure used to ensure that hazardous energy sources are effectively isolated and de-energised before maintenance, servicing, or repair work is carried out on equipment. It protects workers from the unexpected release of electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, thermal, or chemical energy during such activities.

A LOTOTO Assessment evaluates an organisation's energy isolation procedures, the adequacy of its lockout devices and equipment, the competency of personnel responsible for implementing isolation, the documentation and permit systems supporting the process, and the overall effectiveness of the LOTOTO programme in practice — identifying gaps between documented procedures and actual field practice. It is essential for manufacturing, chemicals, oil and gas, utilities, and any industry where maintenance activities on energised equipment represent a significant risk of serious injury or fatality — making LOTOTO assessment a critical component of any comprehensive electrical and mechanical safety programme.
