Lightning Protection Design Study

Electrical Safety Engineering & Studies Header

What is a Lightning Protection Design Study?

A Lightning Protection Design Study is an engineering assessment that evaluates the risk of lightning strike to a structure and its occupants — and designs an appropriate lightning protection system to intercept, conduct, and safely dissipate the energy of a lightning strike to earth without causing damage to the structure, its contents, or the people within it. The study involves a lightning risk assessment in accordance with IS 2309 and IEC 62305 — calculating the risk of lightning strike based on the building's dimensions, location, usage, and the local keraunic level — and designing the external and internal lightning protection system required to reduce the risk to an acceptable level.

The design covers air termination networks, down conductors, earth termination systems, and surge protection devices for electrical and electronic systems. It is required for all buildings above defined risk thresholds, structures in high keraunic level locations, facilities storing flammable or explosive materials, and any building where the consequences of a lightning strike could be severe — including hospitals, data centres, fuel storage facilities, and tall structures.
