Fault Level Calculation

What is a Fault Level Calculation?
A Fault Level Calculation — also known as a Short Circuit Analysis — determines the maximum fault current that can flow at each point in an electrical distribution system under short circuit conditions. This information is essential for verifying that all electrical equipment — switchgear, circuit breakers, cables, busbars, and transformers — has an adequate fault current rating to safely interrupt or withstand the maximum fault current without damage or failure.
Fault levels change over time as the electrical network evolves — with new generation sources, network reconfigurations, utility supply changes, or additions of large motors all affecting fault levels throughout the system. Regular fault level calculations ensure that equipment ratings remain adequate and that protection settings are correctly coordinated — preventing catastrophic failures and ensuring personnel safety during fault conditions. EGSS conducts fault level calculations using industry-standard power system analysis software — supporting new electrical system design, equipment selection, protection coordination studies, and periodic reviews of existing systems for industrial, commercial, and infrastructure facilities.
