Emergency Lighting Design

What is a Emergency Lighting Design?
Emergency lighting is the system of lighting that activates automatically when normal power supply fails — providing sufficient illumination for occupants to safely evacuate a building during a fire or other emergency. Emergency Lighting Design is the engineering process of specifying and designing these systems in accordance with the National Building Code of India, IS 3646, and applicable fire safety standards.
The design covers escape route lighting, open area lighting, high-risk task area lighting, and exit sign illumination — determining luminaire types, placement, lux levels, battery backup duration, and testing and maintenance requirements. It is integrated with the overall fire and life safety design of the building — ensuring that evacuation routes are clearly and reliably illuminated in all emergency conditions. Emergency lighting design is required for all commercial, industrial, healthcare, hospitality, and institutional buildings above defined thresholds — and is a critical element of building compliance, fire NOC applications, and occupancy certification.
