Arc Flash Study — ETAP, IEEE 1584, NFPA 70E

What is a Arc Flash Study — ETAP, IEEE 1584, NFPA 70E?
An Arc Flash Study is an engineering analysis that calculates the incident energy released during an electrical arc flash event at specific points in an electrical distribution system — determining the arc flash boundary, the required personal protective equipment for workers operating on or near energised equipment, and the equipment labelling requirements. The study is conducted using power system modelling software — typically ETAP — with calculations performed in accordance with IEEE 1584, the internationally recognised standard for arc flash hazard calculations.
The results inform arc flash hazard labels on electrical equipment, PPE selection for electrical workers, and electrical safety programme design — aligned with NFPA 70E, the standard for electrical safety in the workplace. Arc flash studies are increasingly required by multinational corporations, international investors, and insurance providers operating in India — and are essential for any facility where workers perform switching, racking, or maintenance activities on energised medium or low voltage electrical equipment.
