Materiality Analysis

What is a Materiality Analysis?
A Materiality Analysis is a structured process for identifying and prioritising the environmental, social, and governance topics that are most significant to an organisation and its stakeholders — forming the foundation of the organisation's ESG strategy, target-setting, and sustainability reporting. The process involves engaging internal and external stakeholders — including employees, investors, customers, regulators, and communities — to understand their perspectives on the ESG issues that matter most, and combining this with an assessment of the organisation's actual and potential impacts across its value chain.
The output is a materiality matrix that maps ESG topics by their significance to the business and to stakeholders — providing a clear, evidence-based basis for prioritising ESG action and disclosure. Materiality analysis is a core requirement of GRI-aligned sustainability reporting, a foundational step in ESG strategy development, and an increasingly expected element of investor engagement — providing organisations with the structured understanding of what matters most that all credible ESG programmes require.
