Independent Social Review

What is a Independent Social Review?
An Independent Social Review is a third-party evaluation of an organisation's social performance and management systems — conducted by an independent expert to provide an objective, credible assessment that is free from the potential bias of self-assessment or management reporting. The review examines the organisation's social policies, management systems, stakeholder engagement practices, grievance mechanisms, and actual social performance outcomes — against applicable international standards and the specific requirements of the commissioning investor, lender, or development finance institution.
It provides an independent verification of social performance claims and identifies areas where management systems or outcomes fall short of required standards. Independent social reviews are required by many development finance institutions as part of their ongoing portfolio monitoring obligations — and are increasingly requested by institutional investors seeking independent verification of social performance data and management system effectiveness as part of their responsible investment practices.
