Grievance Redressal Mechanism Design

What is a Grievance Redressal Mechanism Design?

A Grievance Redressal Mechanism is a formal system through which workers, community members, and other stakeholders can raise concerns, complaints, or grievances about an organisation's operations — and receive a timely, fair, and transparent response. A well-designed grievance mechanism is a critical component of responsible business practice and a requirement of IFC Performance Standards, UN Guiding Principles, and other international E&S frameworks.

Designing an effective grievance mechanism involves defining the scope and coverage of the mechanism, establishing accessible and confidential reporting channels, defining the process for receiving, recording, investigating, and resolving grievances, setting response time commitments, establishing escalation procedures, and building the monitoring and reporting systems needed to track grievance trends and demonstrate accountability. EGSS designs grievance redressal mechanisms that are accessible to all workers and community members — including those with literacy challenges, language barriers, or concerns about confidentiality — and that meet the effectiveness criteria defined by the UN Guiding Principles, IFC, and other applicable frameworks.
