What is a Environment & Social Impact Assessment (ESIA)?

An Environment and Social Impact Assessment is a systematic process for identifying, predicting, and evaluating the potential environmental and social impacts of a proposed project — and defining the measures needed to avoid, minimise, mitigate, or compensate for significant adverse impacts before the project commences. ESIA is required by development finance institutions and international lenders as a condition of financing for projects with significant environmental or social risk — aligned with IFC Performance Standards, World Bank Environmental and Social Framework, and other applicable frameworks.

It covers a comprehensive range of impact categories including air quality, water resources, biodiversity, land acquisition, community health and safety, livelihoods, cultural heritage, and labour conditions — across both construction and operational phases. EGSS conducts ESIA for infrastructure, industrial, energy, and real estate projects — providing the rigorous, stakeholder-led assessment that institutional financiers require, combined with practical recommendations for environmental and social management that are implementable in the Indian context.
