What is a Corporate Governance Assessment?

A Corporate Governance Assessment is a structured evaluation of an organisation's governance structures, policies, and practices — examining the composition and effectiveness of the board, the adequacy of internal controls, the robustness of risk management frameworks, the transparency of disclosure practices, and the alignment of governance arrangements with applicable regulatory requirements and international best practice. The assessment evaluates governance across the key dimensions most relevant to ESG investors and institutional stakeholders — including board independence and diversity, ESG oversight at board level, anti-corruption and business ethics frameworks, whistleblower protection, executive remuneration alignment with long-term value creation, and the quality of ESG governance and accountability structures.

It is used by institutional investors, development finance institutions, and private equity funds to assess the governance quality of investee companies — and by organisations seeking to strengthen their governance frameworks ahead of investor engagement, regulatory scrutiny, or ESG rating assessment.
