What is a Community & Stakeholder Needs Assessment?

A Community and Stakeholder Needs Assessment is a structured process for understanding the priorities, concerns, and aspirations of the communities and stakeholders affected by or interested in an organisation's operations — providing the evidence base for designing relevant, impactful social investment and community engagement programmes. The assessment involves systematic engagement with community members, local leaders, civil society organisations, government representatives, and other relevant stakeholders — using a combination of household surveys, focus group discussions, key informant interviews, and participatory methods to gather a representative picture of community needs and priorities across different demographic groups.

The output informs CSR programme design, social investment planning, community engagement strategies, and grievance mechanism development — ensuring that the organisation's social programmes are grounded in actual community needs rather than assumptions, and that community engagement is genuinely participatory and responsive.
