Universal Accessibility Audit

What is a Universal Accessibility Audit?
A Universal Accessibility Audit is a systematic evaluation of the built environment — including buildings, facilities, public spaces, and infrastructure — against established accessibility standards to determine whether they are usable by people with disabilities and others with diverse mobility, sensory, and cognitive needs.
In India, the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016 and the Harmonised Guidelines and Space Standards for Barrier-Free Built Environment establish the requirements for accessible design — covering approach and entry, internal circulation, sanitary facilities, signage, communication systems, and emergency evacuation arrangements.
The audit identifies barriers to access, documents non-conformances against the applicable standards, and provides a prioritised action plan for improvements — supporting organisations in meeting their legal obligations and building genuinely inclusive environments.
