Job Safety Analysis (JSA)

Risk & Process Safety Header

What is a Job Safety Analysis (JSA)?

Job Safety Analysis — commonly known as JSA — is a systematic technique for breaking down a job or task into its individual steps, identifying the hazards associated with each step, and defining the controls required to perform the task safely.

JSA is widely used in construction, manufacturing, oil and gas, and maintenance operations — particularly for non-routine, high-risk, or first-time tasks where a structured approach to hazard identification is essential before work begins.

The output is a documented JSA worksheet that serves as both a risk control tool and a training reference — ensuring workers understand the hazards associated with their tasks and the controls they are required to follow.
