Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment (HIRA)

Risk & Process Safety Header

What is a Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment (HIRA)?

Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment — commonly known as HIRA — is a systematic process for identifying all hazards present in a workplace or operation, evaluating the likelihood and severity of potential harm, and determining appropriate controls to eliminate or reduce risk to acceptable levels.

HIRA is a foundational requirement under ISO 45001 and a core element of any effective safety management system. It covers all tasks, activities, and operational areas — from routine work to non-routine activities, maintenance operations, and emergency scenarios.

The output is a comprehensive HIRA register with risk ratings, recommended controls, and a prioritised corrective action plan — giving organisations a structured, defensible basis for managing workplace safety risks.
