What is a Environmental Aspect & Impact Assessment?

An Environmental Aspect and Impact Assessment is a structured process for identifying the environmental aspects of an organisation's activities, products, and services — and evaluating the significance of their actual and potential impacts on the environment.

It is a foundational requirement of ISO 14001 and forms the basis for an organisation's environmental objectives, targets, and operational controls. Aspects may include energy consumption, water use, waste generation, emissions to air, and discharge to water — each evaluated against defined criteria to determine significance.

The output guides the organisation in prioritising its environmental management efforts — focusing resources on the aspects that carry the greatest environmental risk or regulatory significance.
