COSHH Assessment

What is a COSHH Assessment?

COSHH — Control of Substances Hazardous to Health — is a framework for assessing and controlling the health risks arising from workplace exposure to hazardous substances. A COSHH Assessment is a structured evaluation of each hazardous substance used or generated in the workplace — identifying the health hazards it presents, assessing the risk of harm from exposure, and determining the controls needed to protect workers. The assessment considers the nature of the substance, the route of exposure — inhalation, skin contact, or ingestion — the level and duration of worker exposure, and the effectiveness of existing

controls. It results in a documented assessment for each substance — specifying the controls required, the personal protective equipment needed, and the health surveillance arrangements where appropriate. COSHH assessments are widely used by multinational organisations, companies supplying to global brands, and facilities seeking to align with international occupational health standards — providing a structured, internationally recognised approach to hazardous substance risk management.
